UNITING BUSINESS FOR
A BETTER WORLD

At GCNJ, business and non-business members are taking the initiative in organising Working Group activities on specific topics. The Working Groups form a core component of GCNJ as a platform for mutual help among the business and non-business members, where field-level employees can learn from other companies’ practices and academic experts. Fourteen Working Groups (involving 368 business/non-business members and a total of over 3,500 individuals) are active in FY2022 (as of August 2022).

Working Group on Human Rights Education

Countries all over the world are introducing policies to ensure businesses meet their responsibility to respect human rights, and the Japanese government also launched a National Action Plan (NAP) on Business and Human Rights two years ago. Organizational behaviour of business and non-business entities engaged in cross-border activities is now evaluated based on international criteria, in addition to compliance with the national laws and regulations. The membership of the Working Group on Human Rights Education has doubled in two years to reach 186 and are increasingly active in the promotion of respect for human rights and the practice of human rights risk management. We sincerely look forward to more organizations realizing the importance of the UN Global Compact and joining us.

Working Group on Circular Economy

Achieving a circular economy is one method of building a sustainable society. Although many of our business and non-business members are taking action to that end, there are limitations to what a single company can do. We believe that achieving our goal requires collaboration and coordination across sectors and industries. Global Compact Network Japan is one of the fora for such collaboration. A young group started in 2021, the Working Group on Circular Economy is striving towards coordinated action among our 260-odd members. We look forward to working with more organizations joining the Global Compact, including yours; join us!

SDGs分科会

SDGs Working Group

Adopted in 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is now recognised by over 80% of the Japanese population, in 2022. But recognising the term is one thing, understanding what it means is quite another; Japan lags behind other countries in terms of action at the national, business and individual levels. Our Working Group seeks to revert to the essence of the SDGs, which is often forgotten when immersed within our own organisations, and to support each other in taking meaningful action towards the SDGs.

Anti-Corruption Working Group

The steady increase in membership of Global Compact Network Japan and our Anti-Corruption Working Group is truly a sign of the times. We are currently forging ties by sharing our knowledge with each other, and we aim to reach the level of collective action.

Working Group on Reporting

Organizations are now required by society to ensure transparency of our CSR activities and be accountable, including in respect to the Global Compact 10 Principles. Business and non-business members work together in the Working Group on Reporting to upgrade our corporate reporting practices, which is becoming increasingly important for meeting that social demand. We look forward to expanding the scope of our activities, and to working with more organizations who join the Global Compact.

CSV分科会

CSV Working Group

The CSV Working Group works to solve social issues through our own business operations by putting the Global Compact 10 Principles to practice, by sharing knowledge and experiences among members in order to develop new ways of doing so and implementing them. We remained active and doubled our members, even during the Covid-19 pandemic, through our online activities. We hope that more organizations will join us by joining the Global Compact, and work together to sustain the foundations of our society amid turbulent times.

Supply Chains Working Group

The Supply Chains Working Group is working to provide a structure that all companies across all industries can use to build sustainable supply chains, through deliverables for CSR procurement such as training toolkits and self-assessment questionnaires (SAQs). We have worked hard to maintain synergy by being creative in our running of Work Group and sub-group meetings in light of recent changes in behaviour under Covid. We aim to achieve a sustainable society through member collaboration on the myriad of issues found in supply chains and their diverse actors.

ESG分科会

ESG Working Group

Congratulations on reaching the milestone of 500 participants! As capital markets are required to shift focus toward sustainability-oriented business management and ESG management, both our business and non-business members are required to comply with internationally recognised norms and fulfil their social responsibilities. It is increasingly important to engage in mutual learning through activities organised by the Global Compact so that they may do so. Now counting over 400 members, the ESG Working Group is looking forward to enhancing our network and activities going forward with the participation of more business and non-business members.

The Kansai area will be in international focus in the runup to the World Expo 2025, to be held in Osaka. The Kansai Area Working Group works on a wide range of topics from immediate issues to future challenges. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought about an unexpected opportunity as business and non-business members from other areas are now participating in our meetings held online. The Kansai Area Working Group has no boundaries: from Hokkaido to Okinawa, all members across the country are invited to participate in our meetings, which we hope to shift to a hybrid format in the coming months.

Working Group on the Internal Promotion of GC Principles

Heightened interest in sustainability is prompting various business and non-business entities to take action, but such action should be built upon principles and codes of conduct. Our Working Group consists of a wide variety of business and non-business members that share the Global Compact 10 Principles as their guiding principles, and our membership has increased from about 30 to over 150 in the last few years. Our members inspire each other through shared insights, change their own behaviour and spread these insights within their respective organizations. We look forward to working with even more likeminded friends in the years ahead.
