As part of this effort, “CEOs Taking Action: Call for Video Submissions” was introduced on April 1, 2020. CEOs or those in an equivalent position at member companies are asked to present their views on and approach to handling the novel coronavirus (in English or Japanese). The presentations are to be recorded on video and the videos submitted to the UN Global Compact. Submitted videos will be made available to the public on the UN Global Compact website. COVID- 19 crisis related temporary changes in reporting requirements

During this difficult time, the UN Global Compact recognizes that some organizations may need additional time to prepare and submit their Communication on Progress (CoP) or Communication on Engagement (CoE). Therefore, for those organizations whose CoP/CoE due date falls inclusively between 1 March 2020 and 30 November 2020, an automatic extension of the due date by nine months as been granted. The extended reporting due date will be featured on the company's profile page on the UN Global Compact website.Organizations that were de-listed on or after 1 March 2020 for failure to communicate on progress will be offered a fast-tracked rejoining process. This fast-track process will entail a letter of re- commitment from any authorized representative of the company clarifying the specific circumstances under which it is re-joining. Please note that fast-track re-joining must be requested by 1 June 2020. Organizations delisted since 1 March 2020 that do not apply for reprieve will remain de-listed.

12th China-Japan-Korea Roundtable Conference in Tokyo Postponed by One Year

This conference was scheduled to take place in Tokyo in October 2020, but it has been rescheduled for October 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since this roundtable is designed to be a venue for businesspeople, academics, and many young people from the three countries to come together to discuss issues, the decision was made to postpone it in order to ensure the safety of the participants. More information on the roundtable conference to be held in 2021 will be announced as it becomes available.

AKK Network 13th Term Member Application Period Postponed

In ordinary circumstances, member applications and scheduling of meetings for the upcoming 13th term of the AKK network would begin soon. However, this term's timeline will be revised, and details will be provided in September or later.

Information from DRR Working Group on Measures to Prevent COVID-19 Infection

The DRR Working Group of persons in charge of emergency management at member companies has been sharing and circulating information on the novel coronavirus via Zoom meetings and group emails, as well as sharing notices in the GCNJ news section.
Looking ahead, corporate risk management will become even more important once the state of emergency in Japan is lifted, as the risk of infection will rise when employees begin returning to work. The two key points of risk management for preventing infection and ensuring business continuity will be that each company defines which people are considered to be in close contact within the office and that both companies and individuals quickly identify the onset of an infection. Be sure to practice sound risk management measures.

◇ Executive Director’s Message ◇

Allow me first to express my heartfelt condolences to everyone who has been affected by the novel coronavirus pandemic. I would also like to express my respect and gratitude to everyone working hard every day to save lives and ensure safety through their work in the fields of medicine and public service, at companies and organizations, and in the broader society. At GCNJ, we have also had to postpone or cancel many of our activities scheduled for February and March, including working group sessions and our Annual Symposium. However, with your understanding and cooperation, we will hold other major events as scheduled — the audit (May 11), the Board of Directors Meeting (May 14), and our Annual Meeting (June 5) — in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations and putting the protection of the life, health, and safety of everyone above all else. In addition, we will do our utmost to help our 13 working groups begin their activities, one of our biggest projects of the year, in June. Today, we are once again keenly aware of the magnitude of the role we have to play, particularly in times like these. We will continue our work to fulfill this role in the noble spirit of the unanimous adoption of the UN GC10 Principles in 2000 and the establishment of the GCNJ in 2003. In spite of the current situation, the number of official GCNJ members reached 356 at the end of March this year, as we welcomed a record number of 52 new members in the past year. On April 24, we held a new member orientation, using Zoom for the first time, which was attended by representatives of six companies and organizations. This is a source of great encouragement for GCNJ. Although we are all still grappling with a disaster whose end we cannot yet see, we look forward to the day when we are able to put into practice the Build Back Better (BBB) approach advocated by world leaders. In the meantime, we will redouble our efforts, working together to fulfill our roles and responsibilities as businesspeople, citizens, and family members. I appreciate your continued support and cooperation.

Let me close by sharing a message from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
