○【Report】Learning Forum in Kansai (Feb. 7, 2020)

On February 7, 2020, we held our 7th Learning Forum at the Osaka Gas Midosuji East Building. Each year we take up a relevant theme, and this year the focus was “Business and Human Rights.” We heard from the Japanese government (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) on the status of development of the country’s National Action Plan, from specialty NGO (ASSC) on supply chain issues and management, and from the Japan Football Association on measures being taken by sports groups, based on FIFA’s Human Rights Policy. This was a great opportunity to learn about corporate responsibility with regard to human rights and the relationship between the SDGs and human rights issues.

○【Notice】GCNJ Annual Symposium on March 5 Cancelled

The GCNJ has been closely monitoring the status and impact of the spread of pneumonia caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19), weighing whether to go ahead with upcoming scheduled events. Having carefully considered the matter, we are terribly disappointed to announce that the GCNJ Annual Symposium, “Exploring the Future for Companies in the Face of Dramatic Paradigm Shift to Net Zero Emissions,” which was scheduled for March 5 at the Yurakucho Asahi Hall, has been cancelled. Please note that the report to be released at the symposium, SDGs Research Report: “The SDGs and Business in the ESG Era — From the Corporate and Organizational Frontlines in Japan (provisional title)” will be posted on our website March 5 or later.
The need to cancel the symposium is extremely disappointing, especially in light of how many people had registered in advance. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your continued support.

◇ Executive Director’s Message ◇

We were extremely disappointed to have to announce on February 20 that the GCNJ Annual Symposium, scheduled for March 5, would be cancelled. On the other hand, we were relieved to hear immediately from people who were planning to attend and other persons involved, conveying their understanding and encouragement, and letting us know they felt our decision was wise given the current situation. Please let me take this opportunity to express again my gratitude for all the understanding we have received. Still, each day makes it clearer that it is “now or never” for taking climate action and solving other global scale issues. The Global Risks Report 2020, published ahead of the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, included a long-term risk outlook (likelihood), with the five most likely risks listed as environmental issues—extreme weather, climate action failure, natural disasters, biodiversity loss, and human-made environmental disasters. At the meeting, world and business leaders came together to reevaluate traditional shareholder and state capitalism, redefining capitalism and discussing it in terms of stakeholder capitalism. This is a major turning point for the world, with the movement for building a sustainable global society gaining momentum among industry, government, and academia both in and outside of Japan. GCNJ will work even more closely with the United Nations Global Compact Office (GCO, NY) to provide the value demanded by these times as a platform for our member companies and organizations. Our Annual Symposium is part of these efforts, and we are extremely disappointed that we had to cancel it. However, we hope that the situation will quickly settle down and that we will be able to return to the practicalities of our day-to-day activities. The new fiscal year arrives soon, and we look forward to your continued support and cooperation.
